Tiivistelmä: | Based on a text analysis of American excercise manuals, this article investigates the fitness field of producers, consumers, products and practices. The aim of the study is to find out how the connection between leisure and physical excercise and between leisure and self-work are naturalized within the context of American commercial fitness. It is argued that leisure and consumption are in fact doubly connected: leisure is commodified, and also conceptions of leisure facilitate commodification. The findings of the analysis reveal that exercise manuals generally convey the message that excercise as leisure necessitates consuming both goods and services. The notion of leisure as a time of freedom from work and responsibility has been turned into a time of freedom to be invested in the work of individual self-production. |
