Tiivistelmä:This paper describes a method for measuring job skills using survey data on detailed work activities. By using these measures it is examined whether the utilization of skills (hereafter as: sks.) is growing, and how they are valued in the labour market. It is shown that btw. 1997 and 2001 there was a growth in Britain (U.K.) in the utilisation of computing sks (here also as: comp-sks.), literacy, numeracy, technical know-how, high-level communication sks (here also as: comm-sks.), planning sks, client comm-sks, horizontal comm-sks, problem-solving, and checking sks. Comp-sks. utilisation was growing the fastest, and the use of computers (or: comps.) was becoming more sophisticated. The issue of whether comps. have affected wages is re-evaluated, taking into account existing critiques in the literature. It is found that both comp-sks. and high-level comm-sks. carry positive wage premia, as shown both in cross-section hedonic wage equations controlling for many detailed activities, and through a within-cohorts change analysis.
