| Tiivistelmä: | University as a special kind of business is characterized. Environment-shaping effects of universities are discussed. Different groups of universities are identified according to the degree of their autonomy. The characteristics of university management are described. Some sorts of "manufacturing procedures" used by universities are examined /lectures, seminars, self-study etc./ and their problems are discussed. The concept of "academic freedom" is presented. The role of change in the style of thinking mediated by universities is evaluated with regard to its economic consequences. |
