Tiivistelmä:The determinants of export performance of small and medium-sized firms are identified. A basic theory of export performance is developed relying on an empirically supported explorative model. The model includes environmental, organizational and individual decision-maker oriented variables. Empirical proof of their causal connections suggest that, apart from cognitive features such as foreign trade and marketing know-how, "non-cognitive" variables in seem to explain the major variance export performance. The latter is largely determined by organizational variables and by dimensions of organizational culture. In contrast to other studies psychological features of decision-makers turn out to play only a minor role.
