Tiivistelmä:While increasing worker participation in decision making can often increase productivity, it remains relatively rare in the United States. It is shown how the product, labour, and capital market conditions that firms face can work against participatory firms and why the free market may provide too little encouragement for worker participation. Four characteristics of successful participatory systems are described and analyzed: 1. profit sharing or gain sharing; 2. long-term employment relations; 3. measures to increase group cohesiveness; 4. guaranteed individual rights. The interaction of participation and the firm's external environment is examined. The federal government's support to research in this field is assessed.
