Tiivistelmä:This report looks at the market for OTC health care products in Eastern Europe. Although per capita expenditure varies widely in the countries under review, it has increased in all except Russia, Ukraine and Bulgaria since 1992. Slovakia recorded the highest per capita expenditure in 1996 at USD9.65, while the fastest growing market in per capita terms has been the Czech Republic, with growth of 112.6% over the 1992-1996 period. The lowest level of spending per head is less than USD0.50 in Bulgaria where 1996 saw the start of economic crisis which resulted in the value of the currency falling dramatically against USD. Ukraine has the second lowest per capita expenditure. Under the veil of communism the national health care systems were heavily subsidised by the state with most medication prescribed and free.
