The period under review is 1995-1999 for current data and 1999 2004 for the future outlook of the market. All 1999 figures are based on part- year data. The market is divided into five sectors: indigestion and heartburn remedies, laxatives, diarrhoeal remedies, motion sickness remedies and child remedies. The paper concludes that constraints on social security budgets have prompted government bodies to promote self-medication to consumers and health professionals alike. In several markets a traditional reluctance to self- medicate is reflected in a preference for visiting the doctor for the mildest complaints, particularly when children are involved. |
