Tiivistelmä:Does the presence of corporate headquarters in a city have an effect on the incomes of local charities? To discuss this issue we combine data on the head office locations of publicly traded U.S. firms with receipt information of local charitable organizations. Cities like Houston, San Jose, and San Francisco gained substantial numbers of corporate headquarters over the past two decades, while cities like Chicago and Los Angeles lost. Our analysis indicates that attracting or retaining a publicly traded firm's headquarters yields approximately $3–10million yearly in contributions to local non-profits. Likewise, each increase of $1000 in the headquartered firm's market value in a city yields $0.60–1.60 to local non-profits. The majority of the increase in charitable contributions is attributable to an influence on the number of highly-compensated individuals in a city, instead of through direct donations by the corporations themselves. The increased private sector donations from the corporate headquarters' presence do not appear to crowd out government grants to local charities.
