Tiivistelmä:Banks in Japan continue to be purged of the sins they committed during the bubble economy. But there are few signs that they will emerge into anything other than a state of limbo after they pass through the purgatory of bad-debt provisioning. They are, in effect, on a life-support system of cheap money and some may not remain viable for long once it is switched off. When the score of leading financial institutions reported their results for the financial year 1995/6, the fact that they had made sufficient profit to finance massive provisions against bad dabts was taken as a sign of their return to underlying health.
