Tiivistelmä:The paper examines the sociological implications of environmentalists' use of, and dependence on, scientific reasoning and scientific authority. The main topics of the article are - legal-rational authority and the sociology of science; science as an ideological friend of the earth; science as an unreliable friend; legal interpretations of scientific certainty; science as an insufficient friend. The author argues that some greens have misgivings about close relationship to science. It is suggested that those greens who embrace the authority offered by science find that science is a less good ally than they might have wished.
