Tiivistelmä: | This article aims to identify, given Internet (here as: I.) accessibility, the factors shaping the individuals' decisions for personal Internet usage (here as: I-usage.) and its extent (as: ext). Cross-sectional data from the European Social Survey were utilized, and an ordered probit model was employed. The hypothesized link btw. the decision to use the I. and the extent of I-usage. was confirmed. Household income, cost of access, demographics, media use, regional characteristics and general skill acquisition by individuals appear to correlate with I-usage. and its ext. In addition, a non-linear decomposition analysis was applied to identify the causes of the observed south/north divide. It is indicated that the observed differences in the probability of I-usage. constitute a structural problem. |
