Tiivistelmä:Modeling is the principal, perhaps the primary, tool for studying the behaviour of large complex systems. Since it has been used for predictions, analysis, and prescription, it has to be asked what the goals are before building the models. Historically, predictive numerical models have dominated practice. Since the modelled world is orders of magnitude more complex than even the largest models computers can handle, it is argued that computational power must be conserved in several ways: first, by asking how much temporal detail is needed and how much can be supported by available data and theories; second, by asking whether knowledge of steady states may not be more important than knowledge of temporal paths.
