Tiivistelmä:There is currently a debate regarding the degree of intellectual property /IP/ protection countries should provide. The aim of the authors is to assess whether denying patent protection /PP/ to pharmaceuticals is prudent public policy. Analysing the history of market economies they find a close correlation between the establishment of efficient IP rights and economic development. Benefits of IP protection are enumerated, methods of technology transfer are discussed. Patent dependency of the members of the US Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association is examined, the role of PP in the development of the pharmacutical industry is highlighted, costs of IP protection are evaluated. Benefits for developing countries are identified.
