Tiivistelmä:To answer the question what do we know about how successful business use their human resources strategically 30 large British companies were surveyed in such sectors as retail, engineering, construction, leisure, pharmaceuticals and large multi-product companies. To measure company performance 3 financial ratios were chosen: profit before tax:sales; return on total assets and added value:pay. The findings may be summarised under five general points: (1) there are different routs to excellence, but there was in each instance, a rout; (2) human resources were seen as a significant creator of success; (3) Human Resources (HR) Directors were contributory to the strategic thinking at Board Level; (4) the complexities of structural relationships defy generalisation; (5) strategy formation gave to HR Directors their major role in managing change.
