Tiivistelmä:The paper provides empirical evidence on both the impact of the disclosures on share prices and the contracting motives for capitalizing brands. The results of the study provide little support for the hypothesis that the stock market systematically under-values companies with large investments in intangible assets. Share prices gains of a number of major UK companies were positively related to the size of the change in book values brought about by capitalizing brands, but there is reason to believe that this relationship is largely spurious and disappears when allowance is made for the simultaneous release of other good news.
