Tiivistelmä:The report explores one aspect of the economics of the protection of intellectual property rights in developing countries. It emphasizes in particular the possible adverse welfare effects that would be caused by extending intellectual property protection to all countries of the world. The argument is formalized in terms of a simple model of patent protection. The author shows that extending protection to other countries is very likely to be harmful to the protecting countries, and it is even possible for the world as a whole to lose from extending patent protection.
