Tiivistelmä:In broad terms, Australia faces two choices for its broadcasting system: further integration of Australian broadcasting into the international market or continued Australian refusal of inflows of foreign capital, aka foreign ownership, and a Gallipoli-like financial bloodletting in defence of content regulations. Which is chosen will depend on the balance of political power in a specific instance. In Australia the media protectionists are currently probably stronger than the free traders. The new Broadcasting Services Act came into effect in October 1992. The new act has introduced a regulatory regime more permissive than that which proceeded it: considerable emphasis is placed on self-regulation.
