| Tiivistelmä: | A new classification scheme for flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) based on a consistent set of definitions is introduced. Four specific types of FMS are defined: a single flexible machine, a flexible manufacturing cell, a multimachine flexible manufacturing system, and a multicell flexible manufacturing system. The relationships and boundaries between these types of FMS are discussed. The approach provides a basis for the description of flexible manufacturing systems which highlights essential characteristics and allows comparative evaluation and assessment. |
