Tiivistelmä:The New York Philharmonic Orchestra is home to one of the richest musical traditions in North America. Managed by Zarin Mehta, who has been dubbed "an audacious manager" by journalists, the oldest symphonic orchestra in North America has 106 musicians, a 45-member board of directors and an operating budget of USD 50 million. Half of this budget comes from ticket sales, while half is derived mainly from private donations; the NYP receives virtually no government subsidies. The NYP's staff of 70 permanent employees, 20 of whom are assigned full-time to fundraising, oversees the nearly 130 concerts that make up the regular season in addition to tours and other activities. This article presents a brief history of the NYP, a profile of its current executive director and the strategy put in place to counter the so-called crisis in symphonic music by building on the undeniable strengths of the orchestra, directed by Maestro Lorin Maazel.
