Tiivistelmä:A Japanese plant pathologist's suicide demonstrates there's often more than meets the eye in US-Japan trade disputes. Akio Tanii was a plant pathologist toiling away quietly at a government research station on the island of Hokkaido, until he co-authored an academic paper which concluded that a disease called fire blight was present in Japanese apple and pear trees. When his paper was presented at a conference in Canada in August 1995, the spotlight fell on his work. New of the research outraged officials at the Agriculture Ministry in Tokyo.
