In 1992, shop-floor manager Wang Dajie stormed out of his ceramics factory after its leaders abandoned plans for an incentive system that would pay more to more-productive workers. He took a job selling spare Cadillac parts, swearing never to return. The ceramic-plant boss, an ageing Communist Party functionary who had run the factory virtually unchanged since the 1960s, was happy to see him go. But as reforms forced the factory to find real markets and make a profit Wang and his progressive ideas were sorely missed. |
