Tiivistelmä:Population changes, advances in technology and higher expectations put increasing pressure on the NHS (National Health Service). The squeeze on costs means that there is no incentive to make advances in throughput and therefore savings must be made in health service, namely from the way service is provided overall rather than from savings at the margins. Interaction and competition must increase between public and private sectors. Hospitals will be free to choose the services they offer, recruit staff and decide on financial matters. Those responsible for committing resources - doctors and nurses - will manage their own budgets on the basis of computerised information.
