Tiivistelmä:Innovations in measurement, communications and organizational technology are facilitating the selective intervention of market elements in hierarchy and hierarchical elements in market exchanges. Discrete differences in functionality across governance choices are diminishing. Market exchanges may involve close coordination at multiple levels accross multiple departments, or computer links, and elaborate vendor-evaluation programs. Through the formation of hybrid governance structures business systems in the US economy have disaggregated dramatically. The new governance forms are characterized by small molecular units. The growing ease of selective intervention triggers a need to rethink the traditional comparative institutional framework.
