Tiivistelmä: | Relatively sparely colonized and little known to the outside world, the five Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa have suffered many setbacks since their independence in 1974-75. The immense potential of the two giants, Angola and Mozambique, has been paralysed by armed conflicts, internal and external; Guinea-Bissau seems unable to make any headway; and only the two tiny island States - Sao Tome and Principe, and Cape Verde - have made perceptible advances. In each of the "five", however, changes are afoot that offer hope of better management and progress towards satisfying the basic needs of their peoples. |
