Tiivistelmä:It is argued by this paper that once the overall tourism research study involves using of mixed methods, an initial exploratory (herein as: expl.) phase conducted as part of a sequential research process (as: r-p.), requires a systematic approach to achieve a reliable base for further exploration. Herein, it is shown how and why a systematic research design process (as: r-d-p.) in the expl. stage can enhance the value of studies, when the initial qualitative (as: qual.) stage is to be followed by a quantitative (as: quant.) phase. Three phases of an expl. qual. r-d-p. are identified: i. preparation, ii. development and iii. refinement. There are proposed criteria for assessing the suitability of qual. data collection techniques. It is argued that careful attention to the process of designing the initial expl. qual. stage makes up the necessary condition for achieving results in order to form a sound basis for the next quant. sequence of research.
