| Tiivistelmä: | This paper analyzes the profile and motivation of more than 1,300 academics employed on part-time, fixed term or temporary contracts at 10 post-1992 U.K. universities, categorized as 'non-standard academics'. Using a questionnaire survey, their demographic background and the factors behind acceptance of their current employment status are examined. It is found that six out of 10 chose their status, corresponding in some ways to the profile of 'portfolio worker' which tends to correct the perception of them as mainly 'casual'. However, commitment to their current employment status is less clear, with over 1/3 stating that they would accept a permanent job on their current hours. Therefore, there are signs of adaptation to certain forms of non-standard status (hours) but not to others (impermanence). This kind of uncertainty shows the obscure borderlines btw. casual and portfolio status. |
