| Tiivistelmä: | The conceptual and operational validity of notions of "flexibility" and "flexible company" are critically examined. This corporate model has been proposed in the 1980s as a solution for the recession. The various characteristics often confusedly associated with these notions are tested with empirical data in order to prove that this model does not withstand a detailed analysis of changing labour markets, if differences between sectors are taken into account and factors are weighted for change and continuity. Its methodological validity for the mixture of description, prescription and prediction is called in question. The political and institutional context underlying the success of the "flexible firm" model is discussed. |
