It marks the start of a new fiscal year, and there is much nervousness when spring rolls around as accountants tally the balance sheets, preparing to disclose profits and losses. For the past half-dozen years, many banks have had to perform contortions to show even a modest profit. A major reason: the provisions needed to offset bad loans accumulated after the deflation of the "bubble economy" in the late 1980s. |
