Tiivistelmä: | Previous findings suggest that political disintegration is a cause of harsh and rapid trade disintegration. These findings are inconsistent with the fact that trade patterns change slowly. This paper examines if there is a link between political disintegration and trade disintegration in former Eastern European countries, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in the period 1993-2001. A theoretically grounded gravity equation of the intensity of trade between the successor states indicates that there is no clear evidence that political disintegration leads systematically to severe trade disintegration. |
