| Tiivistelmä: | The United States' industry is under full-scale attack by foreign competitors. The response of the Fortune 500 has been alarmingly slow. The responsiveness of the automobile industry compared to the Japanese one. The responsiveness of the steel industry is similar after 30 years of substantial protection. A new managerial elite is emerging but the superior performers are not in the Fortune 500. The traits of the new American competitor is described. What is needed is not more protection. Instead,government must play a more active role in spurring competition and in enhancing,not restricting,world trade. |
