Tiivistelmä:The accelerating decline of American economy since 1965 is examined. The era of sustainable excellence is over. An era of unprecedented uncertainty has begun. The main characteristics of this new era are summarized: technology revolution with regard to design, manufacturing and distribution; new foreign and domestic competitors; changing tastes and consumer demands. Several examples make it clear that big firms are no longer more efficient and more innovative. The emerging features of the successful firm in the 1990s and beyond are sketched. It will be: flatter, populated by more autonomous units, quality-conscious, service-conscious, more responsive and innovative etc. Recommendations for policymakers are offered.
