Tiivistelmä:The theories and models from organizational ecology are extended to test the effects of changes in environment and competition on the growth and decline of strategic groups. A brief review of similarities and differences in theoretical characterizations of organization strategy and competition is provided. Hypotheses from ecological theory are then used to test a dynamic model of competition between strategic groups in the USA brewing industry over an 18-year period. Results indicate that both competitive and symbiotic relationships exist between strategic groups and that environmental characteristics have an important influence on strategic viability.
