Tiivistelmä:The article tracks the history of accountants and accounting societies. In 1881 there were just 1,470 qualified accountants in Great Britain and Ireland, of which 1,185 were members of the ICAEW. In 2003 in seven existing senior accounting associations there are about 4,000 members. The seven senior accounting associations in existence in Britain today represent a synthesis, therefore, of at least 29 societies established over a 150-year period to represent the interests of their members. They have been incredibly successful. With a labour force in Britain today of approximately 30m, there is roughly one qualified accountant for every 100 working men and women. The author claims that Britain is increasingly a nation of accountants.
