Tiivistelmä:The article examines complex relationships in a family business context. The locus of concentration is the family instead of the usual owner-manager individually. Narrative stories about establishing a family business are presented and analyzed. The stories are told by the founders of the firms and the succeeding generations in three different family businesses. Women and their role in family business is not a common subject in the existing literature. In addition the literature has defined the role of women as marginalized through the forces of paternalism and patriarchy. The narratives in the article provide alternative gender discourses and practices and show that there is an evident resistance to patriarchy. The authors conclude how their examination leads to the identification of the small business conditions in which the patriarchy might be challenged.
