| Tiivistelmä: | This paper portrays the relationship btw. regional climate in the home area and the choice of taking holidays in the region of origin or abroad. This decision is concurrently estimated with a bivariate probit model. Herein, the socioeconomic characteristics of European households are combined with information on the region of residence, e.g. climate (defined by a climate index). Using GIS and nonparametric techniques, the estimated probabilities are analyzed. The results of modelling lend support to the hypothesis of the regional climate being a strong determinant of holiday destination choice. It is shown that residents in regions with better climate indices have a higher probability of travelling domestically and a lower probability of travelling abroad. |
