Tiivistelmä:Based on interviews with senior managers of three major UK supermarkets, the relevance and importance of the match between strategy and culture is considered. Characteristics of the corporate strategy in the 1980s are described. The ways of managing culture in each of the three supermarkets are highlighted. The strategy-culture match is examined giving attention to the management style, training and socialization, recruitment and remuneration. Senior managements' views on systematic management of culture as well as changing culture are summarized. The nature of the strategy-culture mismatch that became apparent in the 1980s is demonstrated and present attempts to create a "fit" via new practices are described.
