Tiivistelmä: | The paper deals with the problem whether purchasing intermediate products from a supplier generates a better allocation of demand risks than producing internally. At first, we use a simple portfolio model to represent the two possible decisions and to measure up the overall demand risks for both the supplier and the buyer. A comparison of the respective cost effects results in the definition of the outsourcing rent which measures the gains induced by a change from internal production to purchasing. Furthermore it is shown that this outsourcing rent is positive for normally distributed demands and reasonable parameter values. In conclusion, due to efficient allocation of demand risks purchasing from an outside supplier should be preferred to internal production. |
