Tiivistelmä: | The present paper analyzes the impact of the new transfer system for European Professional Soccer. The main components of this system are that i) transfer fees are no longer freely negotiable in case the player has a valid contract at the date of the transfer and ii) the maximum admissible contract length is restricted. It is shown that this increases the stake of a new club in renegotiations. Therefore, new clubs benefit from a positive externality created through the initial expenses borne by the old club for training young talents even more than under the current system. Although long term contracts are chosen under both regimes, the new system leads to lower investment incentives and thereby also to lower expected social welfare, as long as negative consequences of long term contracts are not considered explicitly (original in German). |
