Tiivistelmä:Hoechst's planning system consists of three layers, the top one concerned with strategic planning over a 10-year horizon, the middle one dealing with operational planning over 4 years. The third layer is a control system, monitoring the progress of operational plans. Strategic decisions come out of a "workshop" system. It is shown how three main workshops perform the planning process; one to make the options, one to decide what measures are required to implement the chosen strategy. The concept of business units will be introduced by 1991. Two strategies which have marked the company's development over the 1980s are described and analyzed.
