Tiivistelmä:Since the oil crises in the 1970s the rigid coupling between energy consumption and economic growth has broken in the FRG. Improved energy efficiency has been the major contributor to this result. Price signals and fears of supply shortages have led to enhanced energy awareness and have spurred investments in energy efficient technologies. The reduction in energy intensities and changes in energy consumption patterns may have various direct causes: technical advancement (conversion); structural changes in industry; economics (prices, optimum allocation of production factors, etc); behavioral (energy saving in homes); government policies (standards, taxes, and subsidies, etc).
