Tiivistelmä:This article's background is of an interest in the occupational ethics of managers within bureaucratic organizations with particular emphasis on the role of emotions in the way managers respond to, or cope with, organizational events. The paper proceeds by first presenting qualitative data drawn from interviews with managers focusing on political behaviour within employing organizations. From there, literature is reviewed aiming to find a conceptual framework within which the research data can be 'seen' and interpreted. The paper's conclusion suggests, albeit tentatively, that emotional responses of managers within organizations might be best understood as adaptive responses to threats and opportunities that impinge on the imperative to achieve career success and avoid failure.
