| Tiivistelmä: | It is thirty years since William Bowen and the author first reported their analysis of what they called the "cost disease of the performing arts," with its profoundly disturbing presage of the future. Soon after they realized in general terms that it applied to a variety of other services. The cost predictions that flowed from the analysis have been amply confirmed by subsequent developments. Since then, while the analysis has continued to play a role in policy debates related to funding of the performing arts, the advent of political and economic pressures for governmental stringency, has sometimes led to mindless cutting in the funding of the arts. |
