Tiivistelmä: | Tired of updating hundreds of PCs for every new software upgrade, many companies are using their local area networks (LANs) to centralize software distribution. But some decentralized firms remain cool to the idea. Amoco Corp. /Chicago/ and other large companies are finding that at least a partial solution is often readily at hand: existing LANs. Described as an electronic shopping center, Amoco's project consists of file servers each loaded with 20 or more commercial PC applications. PC users logged into LANs see a standard interface telling them what software is available on line. Users can pick from a menu and load up whatever applications they wish to use. |
