| Tiivistelmä: | The impact of information technologies on the performance and organization of industrial firms is examined. A brief history of the emergence and diffusion of innovations in the field of information and communication technology over the period of 1970-88 is provided. It is shown how the demand for new systems and services (Wide Area Network , Local Area Network, Manufacturing Automation Protocol, Technical and Office Protocol) is determined. Arguments are presented that a new understanding of production, productivity, technological progress is necessary to maximize capital utilization and improve innovative capacity, flexibility and performance of industrial companies. Some organizational implications are studied. |
