The first stayed four years; now he is back in the USA judiciously considering a follow-up visit before daring to put pen to paper. The second academic stayed a year, went home and wrote an article. The third visited for two weeks and is now on chapter 8 of his book! This story raises the issue of the acute problems facing anyone who tries to write about their own country. |
