On April 1, a group of white-shirted Japanese executives applauded politely as a ribbon was cut to formally open the world's biggest bank in terms of assets - Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi. Then they fled back to work. This days celebration isn't on the minds of most Japanese bankers. The day before the banks' merger, the worst year in Japanese banking history had ended. All but four of the country's 21 largest banks said they would be in the red. |
