Tiivistelmä:Western firms are lining up to capitalize on the Soviet market, but Moscow's Byzantine bureaucracy, lack of distribution system and inconvertible currency have produced a frightening high business failure rate. The difficulties arising from the moderate pace of Soviet urbanization and an inadequate transportation network are considered. The negative consequences of the state-owned enterprise system are highlighted. The Citibank experience is reported. The need for a competitive banking system in the USSR is emphasized. The prospects of joint ventures are examined. The causes and possible consequences of arms reduction and economic reforms in the Soviet Union are investigated.
