| Tiivistelmä: | During recent years many companies have reduced or eliminated their research departments. This contributes to the short term profit position. Longer term consequences of this approach are largely unknown, because research does not easily fit into the traditional financially-oriented planning instruments. We show in this paper that research provides a large number of functions to a firm. These can help to build up core potentials and fringe potentials. Only if three core potentials, namely the identification potential, the transfer potential and the innovative potential, are used jointly can a company establish the necessary condition for research success. In a first approach to a planning model we derive rules of optimal funding support for the core functions. |
