Tiivistelmä:Before World War II, Dutch State Mines, the national state owned coal company, faced major challenges, specifically that foreign coal was sold at dumping prices in the home market. Meantime, coal cleaning needed to be enhanced in order to offer higher quality coal against lower coal processing cost. This paper illustrates how State Mines relied on its innovative capacity in order to overcome the economic, technological and market changes. Both external knowledge acquisition and internal knowledge building proved to be important, although the balance changed over time. State Mines seemed to always be aware of its lack of competencies and knowledge and was open to learn outside its own boundaries.
