Tiivistelmä:Childhood and adolescent obesity is connected with serious adverse lifetime health consequences and its prevalence has increased quickly. Soft drink consumption has also expanded so swiftly, that soft drinks have become the largest single contributor to energy intake. In this paper, we inspect the potential for soft drink taxes to battle rising levels of child and adolescent obesity through reducing consumption. The results, based on state soft drink sales and excise tax information in 1989-2006 and the National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey, indicate that soft drink taxation, as currently in service in the United States, results to a moderate reduction in children and adolescents' soft drink consumption. Nevertheless, we show that the reduction in soda consumption is completely offset by increased consumption of other high-calorie drinks.
